嘉興歷史悠久，文化燦爛。早在六七千年前，先民們就在這里繁衍、生息，孕育了長江下遊早期的新石器文化—馬家浜文化春秋戰國時期，嘉興是吳越爭戰之地。
嘉興秦時置縣，稱由拳。三國吳時，更名為禾興，後稱嘉興，地名已有1700多年。隋鑿江南運河，穿城而過。至明代，嘉興已有“江南—大都會”之稱，歷來被譽為“絲綢之府，魚米之鄉。”嘉興歷代名人輩出。西漢時有辭賦家嚴正、嚴助；晉代有“文澡宏麗，獨佔黨時”的陸機、陸雲；南晉有小說祖師幹實；唐代有十大名相之一的陸執；明清之際有傑出的思想家呂留良；清代有一代文宗朱彝尊、晚清大儒沈曾植；近代有國學大師王國維、出版巨匠張元濟；現代有偉大的愛國主義者沈鈞儒、著名文學家矛盾、著名詩人徐志摩、著名漫畫家張樂平、豐子凱及武俠小說大師金庸等。

Jiaxing is a place with long history and shining culture.6 or 7 thousand years ago, the ancient peasants made their lives here and gestated Neolithic culture in lower reaches of Yangtze River---Majiabang culture. During the spring Autumn and Warring state period, Jiaxing was an important place of the fighting between Wu and Yue kingdom.
Jiaxing was a country in Qin Dynaty and was called Youquan. During the 3 kingdoms period, in the Wu kingdom, it was called Hexing. The name of Jiaxing was made afterward and it has a history of over 1700 years. In sui dynasty, the canal was made through the city. Till Ming dynasty, Jiaxing gained the name of “ metropolitan in Jiangnan” and is well known for the “home of silk and land of rice and fish”. There are many famous persons originated from here, namely, Yanzheng, Yanzhu, Poet fo West Han Dynasty; Luji and Luyun, famous for their rich word capacity and power in Jin dunasty; Ganbao, novelist founder of south Jin; Luzhi, one of the most famous premier of Tang Dyansty; Lu Liuliang, well known ideologist of Ming and Qing Dynasties Zhu Lizun, master of literature of Qing Dynasty; shen Zengzhi, great publisher of modern times. In modern times, there are shen Junru, great person of patriotism; Maodun, famous man of literature; Xu Zhimo, famous poet; Zhang Leping and Feng Zikai, famous cartoon painter; and Jinyong, master of chivalrous novel.

嘉興人文景觀、旅遊資源豐富。潮、湖、河、海自然風光優美。城南有革命聖地南湖，嘉善有“生活著的千年古鎮”西塘，平湖有東南沿海“夏威夷”九龍山海濱，海鹽有江南“一片真山水”南北湖，海寧有天下奇觀錢塘湖，桐鄉有矛盾故鄉烏鎮等。全市共有縣級以上文物保護單位130多處。
2002年，全市的旅遊業繼續快速增長，全年接待境外遊客22.43萬人次，比上年增長133.3%；接待國內遊客859萬人次，比上年增長22.5%。
嘉興已通過國家旅遊局驗收，成為中國優秀旅遊城市。
Jiaxing has abundant culture relics and tourism interests. There are beautiful tide, lakes and rivers. To the south of city, there are the rev revolutionary saint place of south Lake and other places like Xitangliving ancient town of thousands of years; 9 dragon sea shore of the south east coast of Pinghu, which is called the “Oriental Hawaii”; south and north lake of Haiyan, which is famous for “ a truly water and mountain”; Qiantang river tide, a wonder of Haining; Wu Zhen, the birth place of Maodun in Tongxiang. In addition, there are more than 130 country level culture relics protection places.
In 2002, the tourism industry of the city saw a sustained increase by receiving overseas guests of 224,300, which is 133.3% higher than that of last year; receiving domestic guest of 8.59 million, which is 21.5% higher than that of last year.
Jiaxing has passed the evaluation of the state tourism bureau and becomes and excellent tourist city in China.
