COPENHAGEN, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Filipe Calderon received the Global Legislators Organization (GLOBE) Award for his leadership on the environment at the Copenhagen climate conference on Thursday.

President Calderon said it was a great honor to receive this award and he considered it as recognition of the efforts of the Mexican government and people in protecting the environment, including fighting climate change.

Before presenting the globe-shaped award to President Calderon, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown praised his efforts in addressing climate change, especially his proposed Green Fund, aimed at increasing funding to fight climate change.

The GLOBE award was set up by the Global Legislators Organization which comprises more than 150 influential legislators from both developed and developing countries. The past winners include former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

President Calderon said Mexico would do its best when it hosts the next UN climate conference, in 2010.
