The artistic design exhibition has opened to the public at the Shanghai Art Museum. The 2003 Shanghai Fine Arts Exhibition takes home decoration as its theme, showcasing various designs full of stylish and daring innovations.

Chosen from over 200 submissions, the 76 works all have their roots in Chinese culture. Going into the exhibition hall, the first exhibit to catch the eye is a work named "Door and Door-God". Ranging from a traditional red city gate to a modern cut glass door, each has been painted with a door-god, representing the families' hope for good fortune to come.

The hall is dominated by a huge peanut-like house called the "Red Snail's House". The peanut is considered as a symbol of happiness and prosperity in Chinese custom, so the artist molded all the items from day-to-day life into this special shape.

In these and other exhibits, the artists made the most of their talents to reconstruct common elements of life into a truly artistic world. The public will end on Jan.4.
