More than 1,400 vaccine shots for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) have been produced in China and clinical experiments of the vaccine are expected to be conducted by the end of December, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.
At that time, volunteers will be sought in Beijing and Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, to take part in experiments using the new vaccine.
Yin Hongzhang, head of the Biological Product Section of the State Food and Drug Administration, was quoted as saying that pre-clinical experiments of the vaccine have been completed.
He said tests of the vaccine on monkeys have shown that it was effective in fighting against SARS infection after the animals were exposed to the virus, and no serious side effects have been found.
"If everything goes smoothly, conducting of clinical experiments will be approved before the end of December," he said.
Yin Weidong, general manager of the Beijing Kexing Bio-product Co, the developer of the vaccine, said an application for clinical tests had been submitted to the State Food and Drug Administration, according to Xinhua.
Scientists with the company began to develop the vaccine at the end of April this year after the outbreak of SARS. Yin Hongzhang said the drug administration would process the application for clinical tests as quickly as possible.
The news of the vaccine might comfort those worrying about the disease, as medical experts around the world have warned that SARS might return.
Since the appearance of SARS one year ago, 8,000 people have fallen ill from the affliction and 774 have been killed by the virus, according to World Health Organization figures.
The global outbreak was declared over in July, but scientists fear that there could be another outbreak of the disease over the next few months.
