SHANGHAI, June 6 (Xinhua) -- A "green" concert featuring some of China's top musicians was held Saturday night, the World Environment Day, inside the Shanghai World Expo Park, raising support for sustainable and equitable development.

Famous Chinese musicians including the godfather of China's rock 'n' roll Cui Jian, and pop duo Yu Quan, gave lively performances. Thousands of people attended the event at the Expo Plaza in the west part of the Park.

The musicians urged people to protect the environment and save energy.

The concert was jointly hosted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and China Radio International's Hit FM.

"We called the concert 'green' because we used energy-saving lamps for it, we encouraged people who came to it to take public transportation, and we bought 50 tonnes of carbon to offset the concert's carbon output. The money will be invested in solar energy and wind power industries," said Jing Hui, the Communications Director of WWF Beijing Office.

"June 5 is not only World Environment Day, but also the WWF's pavilion day at the Expo. We, therefore, held activities including forums, volunteer activities and the 'Low Carbon' concert to increase people's awareness of environmental protection," said Jing.
