He said: "I think it's very important to encourage old people to use their skills and experience to be employed. They can choose the flexible working time. It depends on the individual circumstance. The key point of continued employment is to keep them involved in this fast changing society. And of course, on the other hand, it can help them get a better life on the economic level.
SAGE also provides free job-seeking consulting services and related training courses to help aging people's re-employment. For example, it will recommend retired professionals to the companies in related industries, or recommend skilled technicians to offer water and electricity maintenance services for communities.
Phua said: "We need to change our social mind. We hope we can make the society to have faith in our aging people. Aging people should be useful and active. We wish to diminish the generation gap between the old and the young. And we hope the aging people still keep their psychosocial and economic development healthy."
SAGE was established in 1977 with the support of the Ministry of Social Affairs (MSA). It consists of six divisions including the Acupuncture Centre, Centre for the Study of Aging, Continuing Education Division, Counseling Centre, Employment and Social Enterprise Division and Community Services Division. As an influential NGO, SAGE coordinates with the government and aging population research field to improve their services. |
