An astonishing collection of Chinese arts and handicrafts is now on show in Shanghai in an exhibition which opened on Nov.9 in the city's Pudong New District. The exhibition is part of the Shanghai International Arts Festival. Among the thousands of exhibits, there are some amazing masterpieces.

This is the fiftth China Arts And Handicrafts Master Works Expo, displaying an exquisite collection of arts and handicrafts from around the country. There are rock and wood carvings, embroideries, pottery, among others. The 100 or so monkeys on this ten-meter long piece of silk look so lifelike because of their hairs, painstakingly sewn on with silk fibers.

This ivory carving was made from a mammoth tusk from the Siberian tundra. Mammoths became extinct around 5,000 years ago and this tusk has been hardened by time into a semi-fossil.

And this wood carving was made from Indian sandal tree about 1,000 years. It took the carver three years to complete this beautiful work of art.

The expo also has invited artists to give on-site demonstrations of their skills, bringing their art alive.
