What is the reason for saying that the position of "one country, two systems" is practical and workable?

The position of "one country, two systems" is a concept put forward by Deng Xiaoping for the settlement of the question of China's reunification. It is a component part of the theory of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and has become a fundamental state policy of the Chinese Government.

The concept of "one country, two systems" respects history and the prevailing situation. It not only safeguards the fundamental interests of the entire Chinese people including the compatriots in Taiwan, but also fully respects the way of life of the compatriots in Taiwan and their aspiration for becoming the masters of their own affairs and protests their interests. Therefore, it is reasonable, practical and workable.

The concept of "one country, two systems" was firstly put forward for the settlement of the Taiwan question, but was successfully put into practice on the settlement of the Hong Kong question. The Chinese Government has smoothly resumed the exercise of its sovereignty over Hong Kong and maintained the stability, prosperity and development of Hong Kong in accordance with the concept of "one country, two systems". People have reason to believe that Macao question and the Taiwan question can also be successfully settled in accordance with the concept of "one country, two systems" to achieve a complete reunification of China.
