5.8-magnitude quake hits sea off Taiwan's east coast

TAIPEI -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the sea off the Hualien County on Taiwan's east coast at around 4:25 p.m. Beijing Time Tuesday, according to Taiwan meteorological authorities.

The epicenter, with a depth of 13.7 km, was monitored at 23.27 degrees north latitude and 123.31 degrees east longitude, said the earthquake monitoring center under the island's meteorological department.

The tremor was slightly felt in Taipei. There has been no report on casualties or property losses.

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake jolted the same area at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Beijing-based China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

With a depth of 7 km, the smaller quake was monitored at 24.3 degrees north latitude and 121.8 degrees east longitude, the CENC said.
