BEIJING -- A strong earthquake has struck rural central Taiwan. Transport was suspended and at least 20 people have been injured. The island’s earthquake authority says the magnitude-6.1 tremor jolted Nantou County just after 10 A-M, at a depth of 15 kilometers.

At least 20 people were injured, mostly by falling ceilings. The quake was felt 250 kilometers away in the capital Taipei.

Service was suspended on Taipei’s railway and metro networks for 15 minutes for safety checks. A railway official said trains would run at a lower speed after operation resumed.
